Design

Once you open the box, you will  notice the elegant and homely Gear4 House Party Rise 2.  The top area of the audio device has a nice shiny glossy black finish to compliment the slick design of the iOS devices.  The plastic used doesn’t seen expensive and could perhaps crack if something slightly heavy drops on it, but that’s not something to put you off, it simply means placing it somewhere safe away from little ones.  The miniature form factor also means you can easily place it on your bed side for use with the alarm clock; the alarm clock comes with a snooze button and can be set to set off multiple alarms.  The buttons on the house party rise 2 are neatly placed on top of the device so its’s easy to reach when needed to and it’s discrete to compliment it’s well-turned elegant design.

Setup and Usability

Setting up the audio device is fairly straight forward with little or no need for the user manual included.  Once you insert the backup battery, you can go ahead and plug in your device to a mains supply.  The best way to set up the device and quickest is to link it with your Bluetooth iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad then once you have done that, dock your device to get the application download prompt.  Gear4 has gone into trouble of developing a dedicated app just for your device which I call “great attention to detail”.   Once you have downloaded the free SmartLink wireless music, radio and alarm clock application, you will notice that the time and date settings gets automatically synchronized with the house party rise 2, which saves a lot of time messing around.  Your alarms are also automatically synchronized.

Using the audio device is as simple as selecting desired function either via Bluetooth or whilst its docked; when using it as a docking station, it will also charge your device making it perfect for having in your room for overnight charging, prolonged use or if your friends are around they can dock their device and not worry about not having any battery life left when leaving.

The SmartLink application user interface gives you option to change volume, change FM frequency, change audio source, settings, set alarm, change equalizer (you get the Classical, Jazz, Flat or Pop equalizer option), and a weather screensaver.  Whilst playing audio you can also display the album art in slideshow style.

Pros

  • Easy to setup and use
  • Compatible with iPhone, iPod and iPad
  • Wireless capabilities with aptX technology for best audio quality
  • Aesthetically good
  • Good size
  • Quite loud for a house party

Cons

  • The speaker area will collect dust over time
  • iPad app is the iPhone and iPod touch size so it doesn’t look good when used in x2 mode
  • When iPad was docked, it covered up the digital display slightly
  • Plastic used on buttons and knob feels cheap
  • Playlist couldn’t display song names and titles properly but there could be a firmware update to fix that.

Verdict

It is reasonably priced, and will make a good present or good addition to your sound collection.  It will definitely be useful for house parties.  Having the alarm function, wireless connectivity and aptX technology is a bonus and adds point for quality.   House Party Rise 2 is available for £129.99
