Jawbone Big Jambox Review

by Tomi
Full Article

The Jawbone Big Jambox is the big brother of the original Jambox which was also impressive considering the size of the speaker.  The Big Jambox is small contrary to the “Big” included in the prouduct name and can easily fit in a bag for a trip to the beach or to take away on holiday with you; weighing just 1.23kg, we are definitely excited to dive in and see how it performs.

Unboxing and Design

IN THE BOX

  • BIG JAMBOX Wireless Speaker
  • 60″ (1.5m) Micro USB Cable
  • 36″ (0.9mm) 3.5mm Stereo Cable
  • Wall charger
  • Quick Start Guide
Design continued….
Taking the Big Jambox out of the box, it looks very robust and durable without compromising on the stylish look of the boxy speaker system.  Around the device you have nice grills around the speakers with great attention to detail.  The buttons are well placed with quirky designs to compliment the overall look of the device.
The buttons and ports are discretely placed on the side so they are not intrusive to the looks at all.  With the placement of the rubber grips on the button, you can not help but notice that they have placed a few just to keep it as sturdy as possible when placed down for your music enjoyment.  The way the Big Jambox is designed, you can also place it upright and will still get a nice distribution of sound in the room.
The sound system is surrounded in a metal mesh with a wavey-like diamond shape in the mess which again adds to the cool styling of the Big Jambox.

Functionality

Switching it on, you are greeted with a nice alien-like sound which was interesting, you also get the sound when you put the device into pairing mode.  It is very easy to pair up with your bluetooth enabled device and can be charged whilst in use.  When in pairing mode the power button flashes between red and white light as well as a notification voice telling you it is now in pairing mode.

You can also use it for phone calls, providing your Bluetooth device is capable of doing so thanks to the built in microphone.  The rechargeable battery built in is a bonus which means you can be cable free when mobile with the sound system.

The Bluetooth connectivity is also very strong and will stay strong with no compromise to audio quality to just over 30 feet and the battery will last just about 15 hours of continuous play.  Using the iPhone, you will get an extra battery symbol when in use just next to the iPhone battery life indicator, that way you will be able to see how much juice you have left.

Big Jambox: Smart Speaker

The Big Jambox is also smart; smart in the sense that you can  sign up to the Jambox MyTalk website, which then allows you to update software and choose from a number of options.  You can also customize the notifications and prompt voices, you can choose from various different voices available.   You’ll also find some phone call settings, such as the ability to assign your most-used phone number to the Talk button in the Jambox, which will dial up the person with one press.

Sound quality

Yes the design is great, yes it is built to last and yes it has a good battery life but the main thing any buyer would love to find out about is how well it performs when playing your favorite albums.

When cranked up to high volumes as well as playing at low levels it played all the sounds very accurately with little or no distortion at all, playing a heavy bass song from Kanye West was enjoyable and you are almost soaked in this moment where you just want to listen to music.  For such a small device, it was able to fill up a room with good sound quality.

Tried and tested with various music genres it handles all the sound very well even better than some of the desktop speakers I have tried and tested in the past.   You can also use the speaker to make and receive calls, and the built-in 360-degree microphone you can use it for conference calling or a family Skype session.

Verdict and Conclusion

The Big Jambox is excellent, it is very fit for purpose with good sound quality, sturdy and cool design with attention to detail.  The design is very simple and has all you need to get started.  The Big Jambox is a little heavy so it might not be the best for taking abroad especially with the limited luggage weight allowance at airports.  The price is also quite hefty but if you have the money you will not be disappointed with the quality.
