Positive:

- Easy to setup and use - Works well for presentations - Supports streaming and mirroring

Negative:

- Lacking some streaming services like BBC iPlayer and YouTube - Mirroring is not as good as Apple TV - Price is quite steep for what it is and could easily pick up Apple TV for cheaper.

Bottom Line

Honestech nScreen Deluxe lets you wirelessly project your laptop or smartphone to your Tv so the contents that you are viewing on your PC and tablets can be viewed on your TV screen simultaneously. Honestech nScreen also can be a great presentation tool for business applications.

Design

Measuring 135 x 82 x 26 mm, the nScreen Deluxe is about the same size as your regular netgear router with glossy white plastic on the top and botton with the middle and side enclosure in matte black plastic.  At the rear of the device there is your on/off button and some ports namely:

  • HDMI Port
  • mini-jack AV output
  • USB Port
  • Ethernet Port
  • Charging port

Using the nScreen Deluxe

Once the device is plugged into power source and connected via internet and either HDMI or AV output, toggle the power button at the back of the unit which activates the green LED light at the top of the unit indicating that the device is switched on. Your TV should now display the nScreen logo, WiFi SSID and IP address.

Inside the box is a CD which carries a software that needs to be installed in order to configure your nScreen deluxe; you only need the software installed on PC or MAC if you are going to be using it via those sources, if you are going to be using your tablet or smart phone then you will need to get the required apps from it’s respective app store to get started.

The nScreen deluxe has an Ethernet port but also has WiFi connectivity and this is so that you can share your internet by plugging it into your router then connecting your devices wirelessly to your nScreen; if you do not perform that process, you will not have access to the internet once connected to the nScreen deluxe.  Alternatively you can simply change how it connects following the instruction manual included.

Once setup, you can mirror your Laptop which I tried with my MacBook and also tried with my iPad; the first thing I noticed was the inability to play at full 1080p as stated by manufacturer but instead streamed at 720p with few lags.  You can also stream your audio, images.  When displaying power point slides, it ran smoothly and did the job very well.  When I was not streaming, I was able to browse my files manually and stream at 1080p and the good thing about this is that you can play various file formats.

Verdict

If you are looking for a presentation tool then this product is for you, but if you are looking for 1080p wireless streaming then you are better off with a product like Apple TV which supports Apple’s airplay although you might be limited to what file formats are supported.  Whilst it’s a good product, it’s still lacking some basic features like YouTube or BBC iPlayer that you would expect from a streaming device thereby making it a simple connection bridge between your smart device or laptop and your external TV.
