What's This?

While I was working in one of the UK’s phone stores, a lot of the older generation tend to shy away from getting smart phones that goes beyond their traditional reasoning or way of life.  I usually tell them it doesn’t look as complicated as it seems, in fact it has less buttons to press and it would only be as complicated as you make it.  Most important they tend to ask if there was a manual in the packaging whenever I did succeed at getting them to switch to a smart phone.

Most manufacturers do not include a manual in the box and when they do it would not be as detailed as it used to be years back so I explored ways which anyone who would struggle to use smartphones can still learn to use their smart phone in their own time.  I began looking at Samsung Galaxy S4 For Dummies by Bill Hughes; I was a little skeptical at first since most of the step by step tutorial could be out of date if Samsung releases a new update to their Android iteration .

The main thing to keep in mind here is that although the software could change, the basics of using the phone such as using the browser, setting up emails, using the Galaxy S4 to check the weather or just simple features like sending SMS to friends and family, the book had it covered and those perhaps wouldn’t change on the S4 for a long time.

Books like Samsung Galaxy S4 For Dummies, exists because manufacturers are relying on the retailers to show people how to use the phones, or expect them to go home and just figure it out and when a new user who has never laid fingers on a smart phone like the Galaxy S4 before gets hold of it, they would simply get frustrated and feel as if they have just wasted their money buying it.

From setup and configuration, to extensive use of the phone features and capabilities – texting, e-mailing, accessing the Internet, maps, navigation, camera and video, social networking, taking pictures, watching movies, downloading apps, synching with a PC, and expanding the phone’s potential with new software releases – this book’s approach is ideal to help users to get the most out of their Samsung Galaxy S 4 Android smartphone.

What the book did very well is show users in both textual and graphical format ways in which they can maximise the use of their smart phones, it  is obviously not aimed at the tech savvy who can simply google any issues they have, it is aimed at users who would love to use a smart phone but are scared to use it in case they break it or can even get it to make phone calls.  Any jargons in the book were explained in layman’s terms also which is vital to the book’s purpose.

Samsung Galaxy S4 For Dummies is definitely a book recommended for any aspiring to ditch their old phones and looking to get a smart phone such as the Galaxy S4; they also have other dummy books available so it doesn’t just tie you to buying a Galaxy S4 for Xmas.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 For Dummies is available in paperback and e-book, priced £17.99.
