What's This?

Masses of commuters like myself have the same dilemma every week, whether or not to cycle to work. If you haven’t ever done it, it’s as rewarding as it sounds, but sometimes it’s a case of weighing up the pro’s and con’s. Helping the environment, it’s free, it’s exercise, always falls short of the weather, the time and whether you have the energy. This new gadget may just tip the scales for you, especially if you have a phone that doesn’t last to long to see you to the end of the day.

Another kickstarter project hits just below it’s half way mark on the first day, The Atom. The Atom is a rechargeable battery that recharges from the perpetual motion of your back wheel whilst you cycle. The whole system weighs as much as a Banana and looks simple to install. As someone who rides to work on a bike regularly and has a terrible phone with short battery life I’ve already backed it.

The earlybird price has already gone to all 250 of it’s backers but at $95 (£62) it’s worth it for people like myself who have to carry chargers around with them all the time. In their release video they’ve stated that for every 10 that is bought they will donate one to someone in a developing country to power their phones, lights or even hospital equipment.

The good news is that if this gets backed, not only will you be helping the planet, yourself and your phone, but you’ll be helping someone in another country. Turning your sweat into electricity could be a thing of the future.

Weighing 10.5 ounces, it allows the recharging of any USB device and they claim to be able to recharge an iPhone 5 from flat to 70% on one charge. Any excess energy, once the battery is full, is converted into electricity to power a device that can be plugged directly into The Atom whilst you’re cycling or is disappated into the air.

The device is protected at all speeds and provides the stability in power conversion with little to no resistance on the wheel itself. As opposed to other devices like this, that convert motion energy into electricity, this seems the least intrusive at 7.5” tall, 3.0” wide, and 1.2” deep and the most intuitive. It attaches to most bikes and it’s weatherproof, and with this, the Atom looks like it could really be a useful thing to have around.
