Did you know you could use the iPhone GPS Map application without a 3G or EDGE data connection?

This could come in handy if you don’t have a data plan active or you are traveling to an area where you know the data connection could be spotty.

You could use the native Maps application with a couple of caveats. You have to kind of know the area and you will be traveling to beforehand. And you won’t be able to use Search or get directions.

Here is how you use iPhone GPS to locate yourself in Maps

Cache the map first – when you have data or wifi connection, load the Maps app and start looking at areas you will be traveling to. This will cache the Maps for you. Zoom in and zoom out, drag around.
When you traveling, tap the location button in Maps to see your position as a blue dot in the Map.
Of course, this no match or alternative for having a full blown GPS app like CoPilot or TomTom but gets you the goods for free!

If you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch, also check out a Cydia tweak called Maps Enhancer. It addes some extra functions to zoom limiting and cache keeping.
