What's This?

Huawei has joined the wave of folding devices with the new 5G-enabled Huawei Mate X, and they’re calling it the world’s fastest foldable phone.

Huawei Mate X – Key Specs

  • 8GB RAM / 512 GB
  • 5G Foldable Device with Snapdragon X50 chip
  • 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch high resolution displays front and rear when folded
  • Dual sim
  • 8-inch tablet when unfolded.
  • 4,500 mAh battery with 55w SuperCharge
  • All new Leica triple camera

Announced in impressive fashion during Mobile World Congress 2019, the Mate X is a strikingly attractive device that will give owners three screens effectively. When folded, it has a 6.6-inch 2480 x 1148 resolution main screen, a 6.38-inch screen on the rear and when it’s unfolded the Mate X transforms into a stunningly immersive 8-inch tablet with a 2480 x 2200 resolution display.

Thanks to some very intelligent design, the Mate X manages to measure only 5.4mm when unfolded, making it thinner than the iPad Pro, which measures 5.9mm in thickness. When folded, the Mate X is only 11mm, making the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Fold look chunky in comparison at 17mm – and the Galaxy Fold doesn’t fold flat. There are two keys to the compact form of the Mate X: it features an innovative curved grip that houses its processors and an all new triple Leica camera system.

The second innovation that makes this exciting device possible is its falcon wing hinge design, which is comprised of around 100 components. The battery of the Mate X edges Samsung again, packing a dual battery – spread across both halves – that delivers 4,500 mAh capacity. And in true Huawei fashion, the impressive features don’t end there. The Huawei Mate X is 55W SuperCharge compatible, which will deliver 85% charge to its high capacity battery in just 30 minutes.

Huawei is calling the Mate X “The World’s Fastest Foldable Phone” because it will launch 5G capable, using a combination of Snapdragon’s X50 chip, Samsung’s Exynos 5100 modem and Huawei’s Kirin 980, connected along a 7nm architecture. Operating under optimal conditions, the Mate X will be capable of delivering download speeds as quick as 4.6Gbps, 10x the speed of today’s 4G data connections. In practical terms, that means the Mate X will be able to download a 1GB file in as little as 3 seconds.

As the device features a wrap around folding screen, Huawei has created a premium leather case for it to slip into for protection. It’s not a perfect solution, as it means you will have to take the phone out every time you want to use it unfolded but it’s nicely implemented and an accessory that we expect to be popular among Mate X owners.

As far as first impressions go, the Mate X is the most impressive of the foldable devices we’ve seen so far. It’s innovative, beautifully designed and competitively priced with some of the most impressive specifications of any device announced at this year’s mobile world congress. Check out our first impressions video above.

The Huawei Mate X will be priced €2299 and begin shipping mid-2019 – customers will be able to pick one up on Vodafone’s Red Entertainment plans which includes a choice of Amazon Prime Video, Sky Sports Mobile TV, Spotify Premium or a NOW TV Entertainment Pass.
