What's This?

High definition televisions are usually associated with high costs by many. However, recently many manufacturers have been making attempts to offer high specification HDTVs at a lower price.

LG LD490

Priced at around £330, The 32 inch LCD TV, LD490 is LG’s latest attempt at a budget HDTV. But is it a bargain or does the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ apply?

The budget nature certainly shows in the design of the set itself. It is by no means ugly but there are definitely better looking televisions out there. However, the chassis feels well built which will be good news for those with wall mounting in mind.

Freeview HD comes integrated within the LD490, meaning viewers have access to over 50 free digital channels and a handful of HD services.

Through its ethernet port the LD490 and LG’s Netcast system, the LD490 is capable of accessing streaming services such as BBC iPlayer and accessing some websites. Many budget HDTVs fail to offer this feature so the LD490 carries a distinct advantage by including it.

The picture quality provided by the LD490 is excellent for a budget television. The LCD panel capably shows high quality, sharp high definition images although motion blur can be a problem due the lack of 100Hz support.

Some viewers may find that the televisions colour settings need adjusting. Thankfully the LD490’s menu is incredibly easy to use and looks brilliant.

Sound quality is also of a high standard due to the large speakers housed in the relatively large casing.

Overall the LD490 is one of the best budget high definition televisions on the market. It has a number of features usually only reserved for high end sets and is an excellent option for those looking to save money on a HDTV or possibly after an inexpensive secondary set.
