LG is looking to make a mark in the wearables market, but not by copying the smartwatches currently available or trying to get in the same league as Google Glass, instead they want to create something similar to the Fitbit Flex.
The wearable device, named the LifeBand Touch, has been leaked and has the same sort of thin aesthetic Fitbit and Nike are trying to accomplish with their line of fitness bands, but this wearable may be for more than keeping fit.
LG may be looking to add some sort of notification functionality into the band, possibly some different colored LEDs to show where the notification is from or to signal importance.
The pairing of a iOS or Android device proves they need the smartphone for some functionality and to store information. This point to a light device, capable of intercepting notifications and sending information to the smartphone.
On the specs side the LG LifeBand Touch will come with a OLED display, accelerometer, altitude meter, and music player for changing tracks on the paired smartphone device.
We still are not 100 percent sure on the “when”, LG has said they will launch a wearable device in 2014, but we are not sure if this will be at CES or their own show alongside a smartphone.
The rumors currently point to a CES unveiling, but with every other wearable announcement from a mobile manufacturer it has come alongside a new smartphone, to symbolise how well one works with the other.
If LG is preparing to launch the LifeBand Touch at CES, perhaps we will see the LG G3 or another high-end device launch alongside the smart-band, instead of getting revealed at MWC in Barcelona the month after.
