Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster 2013 CarTech Review

As the latest addition to the Mercedes-Benz AMG range, the SLS AMG Roadster embodies the AMG philosophy of superlative German engineering and uncompromising craftsmanship. Derived directly from the stunning SLS AMG Coupé, the Roadster retains its sibling’s beautiful proportions, but by trading the iconic Gullwing doors for a soft top, it offers something altogether new: the excitement of open-top driving coupled with the very best performance and driving dynamics.

Beautifully proportioned, every inch speaks of style and power, from the view down the long bonnet to the athletic shoulder sections at the rear. As with all great design, function is at its heart, with the wide stance, long wheelbase and short overhangs optimising stability and handling.

At the front the aggressive grille echoes the legendary 300SL of yesteryear, while the distinctive side vents recall vintage aviation. Yet these nods to the past are offset by cutting-edge features such as bi-xenon headlamps, AMG trim and the automatically extending rear aerofoil.

Climb behind the wheel of the SLS AMG Roadster and you instantly know you’re somewhere special. Uncompromising quality and attention to detail are apparent throughout: from the solid metal centre console and paddle shifters to the hand-sewn heated AMG sports seats and nappa leather-lined AMG Performance steering wheel.

Styling cues inspired by the world of aviation enhance the aura of exclusivity, with a range of AMG carbon-fibre trim features adding to the sense of being in a cockpit. The new E-Select gear lever even echoes an aircraft’s thrust control.

In keeping with the aviation theme the interior bristles with technology, including the Keyless-Go starter function and the Airscarf feature, designed to warm the head and neck areas of the occupants when the top is down.
