What's This?

Officially newbie to the smartphone game, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has already got the tech reviewers struggling to make their minds up, with both the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One carrying meaty specifications, most are making decisions on which is better based on just hardware real real estate.  Samsung has continued to build their high end smartphones using polycarbonate housing, which in simple terms is still plastic.

The materials Samsung decided to use to build their “premium” smartphone might not be of much bother for many, but when you pay so much money for a smart device or if upgrading from the S3 just meant you get few new features, it would make you think twice before getting your card or cash out.  Nonetheless, it is best to leave that to the side for now and actually focus on the technical specifications and features that can be compared or looked at when trying to make and informed decision on which device to go for.

The HTC One will have the update to Android’s 4.2 jellybean at launch while the S4 already have it out of the box, now that is not a major issue, so long the option is available for the users; you can open up the back of the S4 and expand your memory size using a microSD card or even replace the battery/get a spare battery for longer usage, where as that is not available on the HTC One.

Samsung GALAXY S 4

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.9 GHz Quad-Core Processor / Samsung Exynos 1.6 GHz Octa-Core Processor – depending on market
Cameras: 2 megapixel front-facing, 13 megapixel back-facing
Dimensions: 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm, 130g
Storage: 16 / 32 / 64 GB internal storage, 64GB expansion microSD slot
Battery: 2600 mAh

HTC One
Display: 4.7-inch Full HD Super LCD3 1920 x 1080 pixel display at 469 PPI
Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 1.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor
Cameras: 2.1 megapixel front-facing, 4 megapixel back-facing (Ultrapixels in both cases)
Dimensions: 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3mm, 143g
Storage: 32 / 64 GB internal storage
Battery: 2300 mAh

With those specifications compared, you can not make your mind up based on the minor differences that will not affect any average consumer, only the techies will feel the S4 is better on paper.  The build quality is something that would definitely help make buyers’ minds up about which one to go for.  One other point is that they both have their versions of re-skinned Android OS meaning some users might find it easier to use HTC Sense over TouchWiz and vice versa.  Samsung S4 holds a host of new features that could also set it apert from HTC One’s Zoe, Blinkfeed, BoomSound etc.  But overall, like always, my conclusion is to head to your local shop and play with them first before final decisions, but go there with informed mind about what they have under the bonnet.
