Design
The HUAWEI Ascend G300 comes in a slim design, weighing just about 130g. Considering the sizes of its counterpart android phones, it is well designed to compete in this market.
On the rear of the phone are the power button and a socket for the stereo headset. The left hand side has the volume control button, at the bottom part is the socket for USB connection and phone charging and at the back is the loudspeaker, microphone, camera and flashlight
Comparing with the like of iPhone 4/4S, it has a smaller width but few millimeters longer than its iPhone rivals. The battery and the sim card are installed at the back of the phone. Removal and replacing this compartment is easy and needed no tool.
Storage is essential either for music, videos or pictures; the HUAWEI Ascend G300 does not have an internal storage compared to HTC One X with 32GB Memory. But this is not an issue considering the phone itself is a bargain when you look at other features it offers.
The front screen offers a 4.0-inch screen, wide enough to few videos and picture. This feature works fine with its autofocus 5.0MP camera. Although the camera quality has less pixels than HTC One X, its still takes decent pictures depending on the lighting condition of the environment.
Overall the phone design is nicely presented, with a mixture of silver and white plastic, making the grip on the phone firmer.
Charging the HUAWEI Ascend G300
The phone has a basic charging mechanism, with a ‘yellowish red’ indicator at the top of the screen at the initial state and ‘green’ when fully charged. Investigating the charging time: Started charging – 19:21 End: 21:51 and It was fully charged under 2.5hrs.
User interface
The power button at the top of the phone is used for bringing the phone back to life from hibernation, and power off by holding the power button for over 2s and select the desired option. The screen first screen you see when the phone is switched on offers functions like lock and drag to unlock. The user interface is simple and easy to navigate, been able to change the home screen by scrolling left or right enhance speed in efficiency. It makes customizing of the different home screens very useful in multitasking.
Sliding down from the top of the screen is the status bar, which shows the latest notifications, network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, data Switch and Auto-rotate functions. By using your two fingers to pinch the edges of the phone from outside to the inside reveals a quick overview (panels) of your screens for fast selection, which is similar to theHTC One X.
Making Calls
You make calls by pressing the contact widgets on the hone screen, sorting through and finding the desired number without having to scroll down is relatively easy giving an efficient call making experience to users. The speaker is well design to give good quality audio during call conversations. There are other options like Bluetooth and speaker functionality also for enhanced calling experience.
Email, Messaging and Web Browsing
Locating the widget for emails, messaging and web browsing are easy and straightforward to navigate. But after using the keyboard, I will admit that it is not as wide for big fingered people but very narrow. This made typing a little un-smooth and slow but after constant use, I got use to it.
The keyboard also has functions like smileys (for cool texting), changing text to a different language, voice function and the ability to page up and down for text editing.
Web browsing is nice and fun with the availability of the 4.0-inch screen size that makes online video experience fun. To zoom in and out, all you need to do is pinch the screen. Its 1GHz processor, smart and fast, has enhanced the web browsing experience enjoyed with this handset.
Camera
The HUAWEI Ascend G300 boasts a 5.0MP auto-focus camera that makes picture taking and video recording a cool experience. The camera demonstrates the ability to select appropriate white balance, set exposure and up to x3.9 zoom capability. Once your picture is taken, you have options to share it on twitter, Facebook and send it as multimedia messages. All in all, the camera quality is brilliant and does the job.
Conclusion
The G300 is a bargain and the first of Huawei’s Ascend series and for the price point it makes an ideal handset for all type of users. It is very user friendly, has good battery life and feels durable. It won’t handle the functions the way the pricier Android handsets like HTC One series when it comes to speed, but it is capable of apps, Internet, email and more and overall the G300 is a winner.
