ALK Technologies is celebrating the first anniversary of the release of its free ‘CoPilot GPS’ mapping and trip planning app for iOS and Android, with the announcement that the app has been downloaded over 4.5 million times in the 12 months since launch.

CoPilot GPS has proven extremely popular internationally on both Google Play and Apple App Store, including reaching the number one iPhone navigation app ranking in over 70 countries. The app provides users with high-quality offline automotive-grade street maps, comprehensive trip planning and local search for free, with an upgrade to voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation optionally available through in-app purchase.

“People rely on their mobiles for directions and local information, yet are frequently left stranded without maps when there’s no data coverage – usually when they need them most.” commented David Quin, Head of Mobile Applications at ALK Technologies. “The global popularity of CoPilot GPS demonstrates how dependable access to high-quality maps is becoming essential for smartphone and tablet owners everywhere.”

Some of the key statistics from the CoPilot GPS app’s first year:

CoPilot GPS is available to download from App Store, Google Play and – from Summer 2013 – the Windows Phone store for Windows Phone 8
