What's This?

With the launch of Google Glass Exploration Pack to lucky winners and developers, Google has finally released the API and specifications for Glass. The end product seems very much similar to a mid-range smartphone.

Google Glass specs:

  • HD resolution display
  • 5MP camera
  • 720p video
  • 12GB of usable flash memory
  • Micro USB port
  • WiFi & Bluetooth

Google also claims Glass can last one full day with the Glass charger, designed by the product team to give more juice to the glasses. With Glass loosing the heavyweight screen, it may loose a lot of the battery suckers.

One missing part from the specs is the microphone and speaker, which Google has added to make calls and listen to voice messages and commands. This is one of the only ways to interact with Glass, so there is no way Google has just dropped this functionality.

Google Glass API is different from Android, as we expected. It allows users to try a new API and add their app in a whole bunch of different coding languages.

We expect the Explorer edition of Google Glass to come soon, although Google has not given a time frame on how long until everyone gets their beloved smart-glasses.

Full release of Google Glass could take another year, depending on how long Google take building applications and tweaking some of the finer parts of Glass. They have said they could have it shipping before 2014, although conservative estimates believe mid-2014 will be launch time.

Google Glass will probably cost around $300 – 800, depending on where Google can make money but also entice users. The specs seem very mid-range, so Google may unveil Glass at a ridiculously cheap price.

Overall the design and UI look great, lets just hope Glass is powerful enough to run the mobile applications being ported to the system. Lets also hope Glass isn’t just some façade  and is actually a usable product with real integrity.
