What's This?

Apple has forced the issue they are not making a cheaper iPhone, yet the rumours and leaks still run out about the new low-cost handset, set to boost Apple’s revenue in developing countries where Android reigns supreme.

This new image from Foxconn’s assembly line really does push the idea of a low-cost iPhone from a rumour to something we are sure is going to happen sometime this year. With Apple’s hold on the mobile market gradually decreasing, now settling at 20%, we believe they will want to get the Chinese, Indian and African markets buying their first iPhone.

The low-cost iPhone is set to come at the same size as the iPhone 5, but instead of the solid aluminium we will see a return to plastic. The coat will not be black and white, but a selection of colours, from green to red to yellow, like the iPod Nano. While nothing is certain on the internals, we believe Apple will pack in a lower resolution and will downgrade to a single-core processor.

Apple could market this at a budget end price, but we believe Asia and Africa will pay more than they would for a cheap iPhone than a cheap Android handset. In China, where there are no subsidised contracts, we have seen people go to big lengths to get a cheap iPhone.
