What's This?

If you own a Google Pixel 7a, then you might be entitled to a bit of compensation from Google. As it turns out, the company is now addressing complaints from users regarding battery issues on the Pixel 7a, not too long after it faced criticism from a rather messy situation involving the Pixel 4a. This time however, it looks like Google is giving users a more straightforward approach in the case of the 7a.

As noted by several Pixel 7a owners, it seems that some units have had defects with their batteries over time, resulting in complaints of overheating, draining issues, and even swollen batteries. As such, Google has acknowledged the complaints and has initiated a dedicated replacement program for eligible users. That in mind, a Pixel 7a device might qualify for the replacement program if it includes visually noticeable swelling on the rear cover where the battery is located, as well as accelerated discharging with minimal use.

Under the terms of the program, Google says that affected Pixel 7a devices that are still within their original warranty period are entitled to a single, free battery replacement. For users who prefer an alternative solution however, the company is also offering the option to return their Pixel 7a and receive a refund equivalent to $450, although this value will vary by region. For Pixel 7a devices that are no longer covered by the original warranty, owners can choose to receive a one-time payment equivalent to $200 in their local currency, or a $300 discount applicable to purchases made on the Google Store.

It should be noted that the discount and return options are specifically excluded for users in the United States and India, where Google is providing alternative support through walk-in and mail-in repair services for Pixel 7a devices with swollen batteries. This means that users in the US and India will not be eligible for the $450 return offer, the $200 one-time payment, or the $300 Google Store hardware discount. However, if you live in Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, or the United Kingdom, then you’re in luck.

The Pixel 7a was originally launched back in 2023 alongside the Pixel Tablet. The phone came with similar specifications to the Pixel 7 which was Google’s mainline flagship handset at the time, such as a 90Hz display, Google Tensor G2 chipset, and 8GB of RAM. It did retain some “budget” Pixel trademarks however, such as a plastic rear panel, notably thick bezels, slow charging speeds, as well as a more modest software feature set.
