What's This?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 goes beyond simple silicone and performance – the new chipset comes with a wealth of features that add to the S23 series’ hardware strengths. So What is Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy?

The Galaxy S23 series launch was met with a ton of praise and fanfare from Samsung fans, and the fact that the new phones will all come with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipsets proved to be the icing on the cake. This announcement was made by Qualcomm alongside Samsung during the latter’s Unpacked event which took place in San Francisco.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 goes beyond simple silicone and performance – the new chipset comes with a wealth of features that overall add to the S23 series’ hardware strengths. As per a statement from Cristiano Amon, president, and Chief executive officer of Qualcomm Incorporated:

“Our strong strategic partnership with Samsung is a result of our mutual commitment to
innovation and delivering the world’s best smartphone experiences to consumers. We are thrilled to have Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy power the Galaxy S23 series globally.”

This sentiment was echoed by TM Roh, President and Head of mobile experience business at Samsung Electronics:

“We value our long-standing strategic partnership with Qualcomm Technologies. They are at the
forefront of technology innovation and differentiation, making them the partner of choice to
deliver the latest cutting-edge mobile experiences for today and beyond. Our new flagship Galaxy S23 series, powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, sets a new standard for premium mobile
experiences and we can’t wait for consumers to get their hands on it.”

In terms of features, the Snapdragon 8 gen 2 comes with an accelerated Qualcomm Kryo CPU, an upgraded Qualcomm Adreno GPU, with support for the latest Vulkan APIs (version 1.3), Snapdragon Sight which aims to improve camera performance, Snapdragon Smart, a new AI engine from Qualcomm, as well as Snapdragon Connect which comes with support for multiple connectivity technologies including 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, to name a few.

Additionally, all Galaxy S23 series variants also come equipped with the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900
and 7800 systems for multi-gigabit Wi-Fi speeds, ultra-low latency, and immersive Bluetooth Audio experiences. There’s also Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 that uses acoustic-based technology for faster and more accurate fingerprint scanning.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was originally unveiled during Qualcomm Summit, which was held in Hawaii. The chipset takes over for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, although the two latter chipsets are still in use across many other smartphone brands and models.

The S23 series features three different handsets which include the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which serves as the most high-end handset of the three. Aside from the 8 Gen 2, one of the biggest hardware upgrades also comes in the form of Samsung’s ISOCELL HP2 camera, which boasts a 200-megapixel resolution, as well as improved image stabilization and low-light photography.

Going back to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the chip is poised to take on other flagship SoCs including Apple’s A16 Bionic chip, Google’s Tensor G2, and MediaTek’s Dimensity-series chips.
