While it’s not exactly a consumer electronics brand, we here on Gadgetsboy nevertheless cover the occasional LEGO story every now and then, as the company certainly knows how to steal the spotlight thanks to its clever ways of crossing over into tech and gaming culture. Take for example its latest announcement (made at CES 2026, mind you) with the debut of the new LEGO Smart Play platform, which introduces modern tech to traditional brick play.

That said, LEGO Smart Play comes with one key piece, which the company refers to as the SMART Brick. While it does look like a “regular” LEGO piece at first glance, the new accessory features a built-in platform which includes a custom processor, motion sensor technology, as well as an embedded sound system, and will also include a rechargeable battery. According to LEGO, SMART Play is among the company’s biggest innovations along with the likes of the modern LEGO Minifigure.

This isn’t the first time that LEGO has mixed its traditional pieces with more advanced tech—in the 90s and 2000s for example, the company sold its line of “Mindstorms,” which included building pieces in addition to a main programmable brick which allowed users to add robotic functions to their sets. While the last Mindstorms set was released in 2022, the company has continued to dabble with motorized sets with its Technic line, although it’s been a while since we’ve seen a dedicated system which integrates more advanced features.

Alongside the SMART Brick, LEGO will release new parts including SMART Tags and interactive minifigures, both of which will be able to send signals with the SMART Brick to prompt storytelling elements such as sound effects and more. Additionally, the new pieces will of course be compatible with existing LEGO building elements to provide a more versatile play experience. The SMART Play system will make its debut with the LEGO Star Wars line on March 1, 2026, with more expansions to follow.
With all that said, there’s a lot more cool stuff to check out at CES 2026, so stay tuned as we bring you more of the latest news from Las Vegas.
