What's This?

The launch of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips for Windows computers a while back certainly provided countless PC manufacturers a “fresh coat of paint”refresh” of sorts in terms of new hardware, offering more efficient battery life and performance when compared to older x86 hardware. This of course includes Microsoft, which worked alongside Qualcomm in bringing the new Snapdragon processors to its own line of surface devices.

With that in mind, the tech giant recently unveiled its latest additions to the Surface line of devices, which consist of the Surface Pro 12—a 2-in-1 convertible—and the Surface Laptop 13, a more compact and traditional laptop. Both devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chip, and likewise come equipped with Windows 11 onboard, along with Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC suite that comes jam-packed with AI-based software functionality.

The Surface Pro 12 comes with a 12-inch LCD touchscreen and a resolution of 2196 x 1464 pixels, as well as a 90Hz refresh rate which should ideally provide a mostly-good viewing experience. The screen is also designed with a 3:2 aspect ratio, and offers stylus support—thankfully, Microsoft offers a bundled Surface Slim Pen, which can also clip on magnetically to the rear of the device. Being that this is a tablet, the Surface Pro 12 also features built-in cameras with a 1080p front-facing camera that supports facial recognition-based authentication, as well as a 10-megapixel camera on the rear.

As with Microsoft’s other 2-in-1 devices, the Surface Pro 12 comes with a built-in kickstand and support for detachable keyboards, which should come in handy should users prefer a more “traditional” computing experience. Microsoft is offering an optional keyboard accessory in a handful of different colour options, including Slate, Violet, and Ocean. There’s no Alcantara this time around, however.

As mentioned earlier, the Surface Pro 12 is powered by the Snapdragon X Plus processor which works alongside accompanied by 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and storage options at either 256GB or 512GB. For wireless connectivity, there’s support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 (thankfully), although it should be noted that the device lacks a fan for cooling. There’s also a battery can last for up to 12 hours, all wrapped up in an aluminium design with two USB-C ports that support both USB 3.2 and DisplayPort 1.4a protocols. It’s available for pre-order starting at £799 for the 256GB storage configuration.

Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop 13 features a 13-inch LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels, although it opts for a more modest 60Hz refresh rate of 60Hz while maintaining the 3:2 aspect ratio. There’s also a 1080p webcam although it misses out on Windows Hello facial recognition, and you do get the same processor as on the 12 Pro, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM up to half a terabyte of internal storage. The laptop also comes with an aluminium build, which also houses a single USB-A (3.1) port, two USB-C ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. For wireless connectivity, it includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. It starts at £899.
