What's This?

One big advantage of investing in a Google Pixel device is that they tend to get monthly software updates on a regular basis, and with the exception of a few delayed updates, Google has mostly stuck to a timely schedule in releasing its software updates and security patches for its many devices, which include smartphones and its new wearable.

With that said, new updates have finally arrived for the Google Pixel Watch, as well as several of the company’s smartphones. If you own a Pixel Watch or a Pixel phone between the Pixel 4a to the current Pixel 7 series, then you’ll want to check your device for this month’s software patch, which brings the May 2023 software update.

First up is Google’s update for its Pixel handsets, which targets a security flaw in the system. Users can head to their “Settings App” and then tap on “System” to check for the update, which comes with build number TQ2A.230505.002 for international Pixel models, and TQ2A.230505.002.A1 for T-Mobile & MVNOs, and Google Fi (US). As for the Pixel Watch, this month’s update comes with build number RWDA.230114.013, which mostly addresses security issues with the wearable.

In other Google news, the company is gearing up for a big event this May – more specifically, Google’s annual I/O Developer Conference is scheduled to take place on May 10, and it’s expected that the company will showcase its newest Pixel-branded devices, including the Pixel 7a and the Pixel Foldable.

The Pixel 7a is speculated to come with features that place it almost head-to-head with the Pixel 7, Google’s current base model flagship phone. For starters, the 7a will run on the Tensor G2 chip that’s also found in the Pixel 7 phones, and will feature 8GB of RAM (a first for Pixel A devices) and 128GB of internal storage, although the battery might be limited to less than 5,000 mAh, same as on the 6a.

One big upgrade however is the camera – it’s expected that Google might equip the 7a with a 64MP main camera, a big leap from the 12MP lenses that were always found on the A-series Pixel phones. There’s also a 12MP ultra-wide sensor in addition to the main camera.

As for the Pixel fold, it’s rumoured that the Pixel foldable might ship with Google’s Tensor G2 processor, the same chip found in the Pixel 7 series devices. This will supposedly be backed by up to 512GB of internal storage, 12GB of RAM, and will be powered by a 4,821 mAh battery.

Going back to this month’s software updates, users should check their device settings menu to ensure that they can download the new security patch.
