What's This?

Samsung’s VP and Head of Design Strategy, Dong-hoon Chang, revealed at a New Year party at Seoul that the Galaxy S5 will be coming to Mobile World Congress in February.

This is quite decisive evidence and Samsung has never really tried hard to keep their executives from revealing dates, although they are starting to clamp down on specification and design leaks.

Mobile World Congress is an odd place for Samsung to unveil their new flagship, considering last year they held their own event for the Galaxy S4. This year, it looks like Samsung wants a less flashy approach, fitting in with release dates for other devices.

Dong-hoon Chang also said he is excited about the materials being used for the Galaxy S5, possibly pointing at a metal or faux leather design. We hope it is the former Samsung decides to go with, faux leather is nice but we want a full metal unibody.

Mobile World Congress didn’t get a lot of love last year, most of the major products were either released at CES or in a follow up event, including the HTC One, Xperia Z and Moto X.

This year, it looks like a lot of big announcements will happen at the mobile event in Barcelona, we have already heard the LG G2 Pro and HTC One successor will be revealed at MWC, alongside a slew of other high-end devices.

The Galaxy S5 will be the star of the show if rumors and leaks are anything to go on, with next generation specs and a metal unibody design, alongside the newest Android update with an updated TouchWiz UI.

In terms of next generation features, Samsung has remained silent – we still do not know if the Galaxy S5 will come with a fingerprint sensor, similar to Apple’s TouchID or any a flexible display.
