What's This?

With big brands like Apple and Samsung now fully invested in working on new mixed-reality hardware, it’s then unsurprising to see other brands follow suit-take for example Xiaomi, which recently announced its entry into the smart eyewear sector with the official launch of the Xiaomi AI Glasses. While these are not the company’s first “official” smart glasses of sorts, the new glasses take things a step further with the addition of dedicated AI capabilities.

In terms of looks, the Xiaomi AI Glasses are designed with a focus on portability and durability, and are pretty lightweight at around 40 grams. Despite the pocket-friendly weight, Xiaomi says that the glasses’ design uses titanium alloy hinges for a bit of added durability. They’re also available in a number of different colours including black, brown, and green, with an option for electrochromic lenses that can adjust their tint based on your surroundings. Powering the device is a 263 mAh battery, which is reported to offer up to 8.6 hours of usage on a single charge.

Like other competing smart glasses, the Xiaomi AI Glasses also come with a built-in camera—there’s a 12MP lens located on the corners of the frame, which uses a Sony IMX681 sensor for recording videos and taking photos. You’re also getting a dual-speaker system and a five-microphone array which according to Xiaomi is equipped with bone-conduction technology and wind-noise resistance. Processing power for the glasses is provided by a Snapdragon AR1 chipset, which runs alongside a secondary chip that powers Xiaomi’s proprietary Vela OS platform.

As for its AI capabilities, the glasses come with similar features to what you’d expect to find on smartphones—this include object recognition, text translation, and meeting assistance tasks as well. You’re also getting support for automatic transcription, smart summaries, and real-time interpretation across ten languages, including English, Japanese, German, and Spanish. Additionally, the glasses can be paired with Xiaomi smartphones for added camera use, with support for functions such as real-time live streaming and first-person video calls.
