What's This?

As we approach the middle of the year, it’s rather breathtaking to look back at all the tech goodness that we’ve had for the first half of 2025. And while it’s been a somewhat mixed bag of both ups and downs, it’s safe to say that consumer tech has remained impressive so far this year. As such, we’re dialling things down a bit and focusing on some of the biggest headlines from the past few days—so sit back, relax, and scroll away as you wait for the last few hours of this week to end.

Acer Makes its Smartphone Comeback with the New Super ZX Series

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a smartphone from Acer—yes, that same Acer—and while the veteran PC manufacturer has poured a lot of effort into its Windows and Chromebook lineups, we’ve yet to see a new smartphone entry from the brand. That all changes though with the launch of the new Acer Super ZX and Super ZX Pro—both devices are equipped with MediaTek’s mid-tier chipsets with the Dimensity 6300 for the Super ZX, and a Dimensity 7400 chipset for the Super ZX Pro. The base model features a 6.78-inch LCD screen with a 1080p resolution, so it’s pretty much a basic affair as far as display quality goes. Thankfully though, the Pro variant comes with an AMOLED display which measures at 6.67 inches, and should be more ideal for content consumption.

Someone Managed to See a Pixel 10 Advertisement in the Making

With Google’s upcoming Pixel 10 launch on the horizon, it isn’t exactly surprising that we’ve gotten multiple leaks all over the place. A set of photos shared online shows what appears to be behind-the-scenes photos of a camera crew filming a Google Pixel advertisement—while it’s not specific if it’s the base model 10 or 10 Pro, it’s clear that this is one of the upcoming models, at least based on looks alone. The photos were shared online by Mark Teasdale, and even included some storyboard shots at the scene. The photos were compiled into a video, which you can watch here (at least until Google decides to do something about it).

Xiaomi’s New In-house Chip is Now a Reality

Xiaomi’s been busy lately—after several rumours that the Chinese tech giant was working on its own in-house chip, the company recently introduced the Xiaomi XRING O1 SoC alongside the Xiaomi XRING T1 4G smartwatch SoC. The Xiaomi XRING O1 is built on a 3nm process. and features 19 billion transistors, a 10-core CPU (including dual Cortex-X925 cores at 3.9GHz), and a 16-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, which was able to score 3 million points on AnTuTu benchmarks (based on the company’s testing). It also comes with Xiaomi’s fourth-gen ISP and a 6-core NPU offering 44 TOPS for AI processing.

OnePlus Replaces the Alert Slider with a New AI Button

OnePlus recently announced that it’s making some key changes to its software product approach with a heavier focus on AI. The company also provided further details regarding the Plus Key, which will replace the old alert slider that’s been present on countless OnePlus flagship devices over the years. The Plus Key will be programmable for different actions, including adjusting sound profiles, launching the camera, initiating translations, or starting recordings. Users can also activate the Plus Key to access AI Plus Mind, a new feature designed for capturing, cataloging, and recalling on-screen information on OnePlus devices.

Google Announces Upcoming Features for the Photos App

Celebrating 10 years since its launch, Google recently announced that it’s been working on new editing and organization features for Google Photos, which are scheduled to come next month. This includes a redesigned editor with AI-powered suggestions and wider availability of features like Reimagine and Auto frame, as well as new sharing options include QR code generation for albums, a “Places View” for travel memories, enhanced search using named faces, automated “Best of Month” and “Year End Recap” memories, personalized highlight videos, and automated shared albums. Users will also be able to customize their photo grid, hide specific content like screenshots, filter memories by time or theme, and utilize a “Free up space” tool.
