What's This?

The debut of Xiaomi’s SU7 EV showed us that the Chinese tech giant’s range of product offerings certainly knows no bounds. Following the global launch of the Xiaomi 14 series during Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, the company also announced that it will be pushing forward with the continued development of what it calls its “Human x Car x Home” smart ecosystem. Daniel Desjarlais, Director of Communications at Xiaomi International states:

“At Xiaomi, technology will always be centered on humanity. Our innovation is designed first and foremost based on the needs of our users. “Human x Car x Home” embodies this, our commitment to providing comprehensive, better connected experiences. By integrating people, cars, and homes, we aim to create an end-to-end interconnectivity beyond anything available today… We invite MWC attendees to discover first-hand how Xiaomi’s vision is transforming futuristic concepts into actualities by changing how we connect.”

Driving Onwards

One of the biggest highlights at Xiaomi’s MWC presentation was the Xiaomi SU7, which the company positions as a “full-size high-performance eco-technology sedan.” Xiaomi introduces what it likes to call “five core EV technologies” along with the car – these include the E-Motor, CTB Integrated Battery, Xiaomi Die-Casting, Xiaomi Pilot Autonomous Driving, and Smart Cabin.

As such, the company does seems confident that the SU7 will be able to serve as a major pillar in its new ecosystem philosophy – after all, Xiaomi has invested considerable time and effort into the SU7, amounting over CNY 10 billion RMB in R&D, and a global team of more than 3,400 engineers and 1,000 technical experts. Given its role in Xiaomi’s new ecosystem, the SU7 will no doubt come with support for the company’s other IoT products including its wearables and smartphones, as well as its Hyper OS software platform.

New Phones and Wearables

Xiaomi’s also banking a lot on its new flagship smartphone series – attendees MWC 2024 witnessed the global launch of the Xiaomi 14 series phones firsthand. The 14 series consists of two models with the “standard” Xiaomi 14, and the more souped-up Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the 14 series phones also pack camera features co-developed by Xiaomi and veteran camera brand Leica.

Xiaomi also showed off a trio of new wearable devices, which include the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro and Xiaomi Watch S3 (both of which run on Xiaomi’s custom OS) as well as the Xiaomi Watch 2, a budget-friendly device that’s powered by Google’s Wear OS platform.

Man’s Cybernetic Best Friend

Interestingly, Xiaomi also showcased its quadruped robot, the CyberDog 2. While robotic pets aren’t exactly a new product segment, they aren’t exactly in the mainstream either, a situation that Xiaomi seems to be addressing with the Cyberdog 2.

As such, Xiaomi’s futuristic canine companion does pack a considerable amount of hardware inside, including a fusion sensing and decision-making system with 19 sensors for vision, touch, and hearing. The company says that the robot is designed to replicate the movement, appearance, and interactions of a real dog, in addition to allowing it to interact to humans the same way a real one does.

With all this being said, it looks like the company has a clear goal for what it wants to achieve with its device ecosystem, at least from what we’ve seen so far. Given Xiaomi’s worldwide market reach, it should be interesting to see how this strategy plays out in the years to come.
