What's This?

gaming PC Named Skull Canyon, Intel would be using a quad-core Skylake chip in its updated NUC device and it would feature a Thunderbolt 3 port for hooking it up to an external dock similar to the Razer Core. The announcement as a whole got gamers a bit excited about what they could expect from Intel’s new NUC gaming PC, so let’s break it down!

Let’s start by going more into spec and what it features. Well, first of all the high performing NUC gaming PC will feature a Skylake quad-core i7 processor with an Iris Pro GPU and a thermal design power of 45 watts, this will enable it to compete with the most powerful laptop computers on the market. Alongside this connectivity-wise the NUC will include an HDMI, a mini DisplayPort, four USB 3.0 ports, two internal USB 3.0 ports and an infrared sensor.

Going more into the graphics side Intel’s Iris Pro graphics won’t provide the same level of performance as a semi-decent discrete GPU, but it could be a handy machine to sit next to your TV for some light Steam Machine-style gaming. However due to having a Thunderbolt 3 port It would make the upcoming NUC the smallest PC yet capable of drawing huge graphical grunt from an external source why? Well, even though other compact gaming PCs like the Asus ROG D20AJ already exist they lack the means to connect to an external GPU.  What’s more the Skull Canyon can be a mini-PC for gaming and GPU-intensive work that can compete with current mid- to high-end gaming laptops.

All in all the NUC Skull Canyon looks potentially to be a great device as its targeted at both gamers and workstation users, meaning not only can it be a full fledging gaming PC but also do normal everyday tasks seamlessly. More so if the NUC system is an affordable device it might be a reasonable alternative to a large gaming desktop for gamers. In terms of price Intel are holding back from disclosing it to the public so we can only speculate the price at the minute, however what we can tell you is if you are interested in potentially buying the Skull Canyon NUC it should be available for sale in March.
