What's This?

In a move that would have been unthinkable a decade ago, Microsoft has now confirmed the upcoming launch of a remastered version of Gears of War, twenty years following its initial release on the Xbox 360. Known as Gears of War: Reloaded, the game is scheduled for a summer release and will feature enhancements for gameplay, visuals, and new features as well, alongside some other big surprises.

One big feature of the game is that it will be available for multiple platforms, including—yes, you guessed it— the PS5. Gears of War: Reloaded is coming to PlayStation 5, PC, and Steam, a departure from the franchise’s historical exclusivity. Throughout the years, many Xbox fans saw the Gears series as one of the main franchises of Microsoft’s console line, setting it apart from competitors such as Nintendo and Sony, the latter of which thrived on flagship titles such as the Mario series and God of War, to name a couple. Speaking via the official Xbox website, Mike Crump, Studio Head at The Coalition states:

“Gears of War: Reloaded is a celebration of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises. Featuring 4K resolution, 120 FPS support, and the ultimate multiplayer experience with cross-progression and cross-play, across all platforms, this is the definitive way to experience the game that started it all.”

“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever.”

The game will come with several enhancements including support for 4K resolution with up to 60 frames per second for campaign and up to 120 frames per second in multiplayer modes, respectively. Reloaded will also support High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Dolby Vision for enhanced colour accuracy and contrast, alongside 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos and 3D Spatial Audio, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), upgraded 4K assets and remastered textures, post-processing effects as well as improved shadows and reflections.

Gears of War: Reloaded is scheduled to launch on August 26th, and will go for $39.99 across all platforms. The game will also be available on its release date for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscribers. The game also comes with Xbox Play Anywhere support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and owners of the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Gears of War: Reloaded.
