What's This?

Huawei’s expertise in pumping out some of the best-looking watches has been pretty much established at this point, and the company has now followed-up its Huawei Watch line with the new Watch 5. Available in 46mm and 42mm variants, Huawei has packed some pretty great hardware inside the new models, so what’s new this time around?

Both size variants feature sleek and premium-looking designs, with the 46mm variant coming in purple, silver, brown (titanium) and black (stainless steel) designs, while its smaller sibling comes in beige, sand gold, white and green (stainless steel) versions. The Watch 5 series is likewise rated for 5ATM water resistance and IP69 dust and water protection, which houses a LTPO 2.0 AMOLED touch screen available in 1.5 inches for the larger model, and 1.38 inches for the smaller model. The displays are rather bright, peaking at 3,000 nits which should be ideal for outdoor viewing.

For controls, you’re getting a rotating crown in addition to a single action button, a common control setup found on many smartwatches nowadays. You’ll also find a HUAWEI X-TAP sensor, which combines ECG, PPG, and a 10-level Tactile Sensor into a single button, which is a nice feature to have on a modern smartwatch. It’s also something that we’ve yet to see on devices from rival brands.

Huawei wasn’t too specific on the battery sizes for both models, although it claims that the larger watch can last for up to 4.5 days of regular use and up to 11 days on battery-saver mode, while the smaller variant can go for up to three days with typical usage and seven days on battery-saver mode. For connectivity, there’s Bluetooth 5.2 in addition to WiFi 6 and GNSS for navigation purposes.

Users who were expecting to get Google and Android apps and services on this one might be disappointed, as you’re not getting Wear OS on this one—the Huawei Watch 5 runs on Huawei’s Harmony OS, much like its previous watch models. The OS includes a multitude of different workout modes (more than a hundred according to Huawei), and customizable watch faces as well.

The Huawei Watch 5 also packs a ton of hardware sensors designed to track a wide range of data. These include an acceleration sensor, gyroscope sensor, compass sensor, and an advanced Optical heart rate sensor 6.0 for accurate pulse monitoring. It also features a barometer for altitude and atmospheric pressure readings, an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment, and a body temperature sensor. You’re also getting an ECG sensor, along with a depth sensor and a tactile sensor for user interaction. For buyers in the UK, the Huawei Watch 5 series starts at £399.99 for both the 46mm and 42mm sizes.
