It’s certainly an interesting time within the smartphone industry, at least as far as design standards are concerned. With Samsung and Apple leading the charge, we’re seeing more and more smartphone manufacturers release their own thinned-down smartphones, and it just so happens that Huawei is the latest brand to hop on the bandwagon. The company recently announced the Mate Air 70, which comes with—you guessed it—a pretty thin design. What else does it come with though? Let’s take a look.

With a thickness of just 6.6mm, the Mate Air 70 is one of the thinnest smartphones on the market right now, although Huawei has nevertheless managed to cram a ton of impressive hardware inside. The phone comes with a large 7-inch OLED display, with a decently sharp resolution of 2760 × 1320 pixels. This display is wrapped in a chassis that comes in three different colours including black, white, and a gold and silver combination; there’s also IP69 protection against dust and water.

Interestingly, the Mate Air 70 comes with two different processor variants—the 16 GB RAM version is equipped with a Kirin 9020A processor, while the 12 GB RAM version is equipped with a Kirin 9020B processor, although both come with HarmonyOS 5.1 for software.
Given how slim it is, you might be wondering what battery is running inside the device—there’s a 6,500mAh battery inside, which is very impressive especially when you consider that this is larger than what you get on phones like the POCO F7 Pro, for example. It also supports 66W charging speeds, which again is a much-welcome feature to have in a very slim smartphone (Samsung and Apple should start taking notes).

For its cameras, the Mate Air 70 packs a massive rounded camera island on the rear panel, as is the trend with most Chinese smartphones at the moment; in fact, we wouldn’t blame you if you initially mistake this for a model from Vivo or Xiaomi, for example. This module in turn houses a triple-camera system which consists of a 50MP main camera, accompanied by a 12MP telephoto shooter with 3x zoom, as well as an 8MP ultrawide camera. In front, you get a 10.7MP camera for selfies and video calls.

As for pricing and availability, the Huawei Mate Air 70 costs around 500 quid when converted, although the phone is currently exclusive for buyers in China. Going back to its impressive hardware setup (especially its battery), other brands might learn a thing or two about how to design a slim smartphone without imposing unnecessary hardware limitations on buyers.
