It’s been a while since we’ve covered a news story about a “dumbphone,” or feature-phone for some of you folks out there. Finnish tech brand and former Nokia licensee HMD recently teased a new and upcoming addition to its handset lineup, which it refers to as the Terra M. In a day and age where smartphones reign supreme in the consumer electronics market, it might seem like a rather strange decision to release a device like the Terra M, but there’s a bit more to the device than its limitations.

One big highlight of the Terra M is that it’s meant as an “enterprise” phone. This essentially means that it’s designed more for business use for large corporate operations, with stricter security and management tools, as well as longer support lifecycles versus more “regular” consumer-grade hardware. You also probably won’t be able to grab one from your local mobile phone shop or carrier as you would any other phone.

It’s also designed to be durable. As you can probably tell from the images, the Terra M can probably take more than its fair share of drops and bumps thanks to its MIL-STD-810 certification, as well as IP68/69K dust and water protection. Based on its design, the phone also has a rather chunky exterior, with thick sides, angular corners, and a very industrial look to it. ON the back you’ll find a plate which is screwed onto the rear panel of the phone, in addition to a single camera lens with a LED built-in flash.
In addition to the keypad on the front, HMD has also added programmable push-to-talk and emergency buttons on the side of the device, something that’s more often seen on a walkie-talkie rather than your average day-to-day phone.

The tiny display in front serves as your portal to the phone’s software, and HMD states that the Terra M comes with pre-loaded apps for communication and enterprise enrolment, along with support for 4G connectivity, VoLTE calls, VoWiFI, as well as eSIM and hotspot functionality. For battery, there’s a 2510mAh battery inside, which is rather large especially for a basic phone these days. On paper, HMD says that the phone can last for up to 10 days of standby time.

HMD will also sell accessories along with the phone, which include a belt holster (unsurprising given its emphasis on durability), and a wireless charging dock which can instantly attach to the phone’s back plate. The Terra M’s official webpage currently doesn’t have any info on pricing and regional availability, although it might formally announce the device soon.
