What's This?

If you’re a Spotify listener but aren’t too keen on signing up for the platform’s Premium-tier subscription, then you might want to hear what Spotify’s got in store—the platform recently announced that it’s bringing over several major updates to its free service, which allows for a bit more freedom and personalization when using the app.

One of the most highlighted changes finally gives free-tier users a level of control that was previously limited to premium subscribers—listeners can now instantly play any song on demand by searching for it or by tapping a link shared by friends or even artists. Previously, users on Spotify’s free service were only able to listen to tracks as part of pre-existing playlists, without the ability to edit the playlists themselves.

Speaking of playlists, users will be able to create and personalize playlists even on a free subscription. When you start a new playlist, the app will now recommend songs to add with the tap of a button, with the suggestions improving the more you listen. Additionally, users can design custom playlist covers, with support for different images, colours, and even text (another feature previously exclusive to Premium users).

There’s also a new Daylist feature that creates a personalized playlist which changes throughout the day. It adapts to the music you listen to at specific times, essentially providing a soundtrack to one’s daily routine from morning to night. The playlist updates regularly, but users can of course can save their favourite Daylists at any time to revisit it later.

Finally, Spotify’s free service is enhancing its discovery tools and social features like Discover Weekly and Release Radar to find new music each week. The real-time lyrics feature is also more integrated, allowing you to follow along with your favorite songs by simply swiping up on the “Now Playing” screen. Finally, users can also pick specific lyrics directly to social media platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp.

Just recently, Spotify announced that it was rolling out its lossless audio feature to Premium subscribers in select markets, with support for playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for a richer, more detailed listening experience. The upgrade is scheduled to arrive for more than 50 countries throughout October, starting with users in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK.
