What's This?

Amazon recently took to stage to announce its latest generation of Kindle Scribe devices, which pack some pretty neat features including front-lit displays, as well as the first-ever Kindle Scribe Colorsoft with a colour display. Amazon says that the new e-readers are designed to be thinner, lighter, and faster with an emphasis on a paper-like feel.

That being said, the new Kindle Scribe comes with a new look that’s just 5.4mm thin and weighs 400g, although there are more changes all around—Amazon says it is 40% faster which should make for smoother writing and page turns, and there’s a larger 11-inch glare-free display which according to the company mirrors the dimensions of a piece of paper, designed to make reviewing full-sized documents and note-taking feel completely natural.

As mentioned earlier, the new devices feature a new front light system with twice the number of miniature LEDs for a more narrow bezel and uniform lighting. The new Kindle tablets come with texture-moulded glass to increase friction, which gives a more matte feel and finish while the screens themselves come with a display stack that reduces parallax, creating the sensation of writing directly on the page. Amazon adds that there’s also a new quad-core chip in play along with increased memory, and an Oxide display technology for snappier performance.

Amazon states that it’s developed its custom Colorsoft display technology using a colour filter and light guide with nitride LEDs for soft, eye-friendly colours without washing out detail, and there’s a new rendering engine which enhances colour and ensures writing is fast and natural. The new Kindle Scribe models also offer writing and drawing in one of 10 pen colours or highlighting in one of five colours, and there’s a new shader tool which allows users to create smooth gradients and subtle tones.

Another big selling point this year is the addition of new productivity features, which are based on AI-powered software. The new home screen introduces Quick Notes for fast jotting and easy access to recent books, documents, and notebooks, and document management is improved with support for Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive for easier importing and exporting of PDFs. Like most devices these days, Amazon has included an AI search feature which allows users to search notes naturally and receive simple AI summaries, with the option for follow-up questions.
