If you’re on the lookout for a brand new budget-friendly Android tablet, then you’re in luck—Xiaomi recently announced the launch of the Redmi Pad 2, its new addition to its ever-growing line of tablet devices. As with other Redmi-branded tablets, the Redmi Pad 2 comes with some familiar elements, although Xiaomi has snuck in some interesting changes with this one.

Available in Mint Green and Graphite Gray colour variants, the Redmi Pad 2 looks pretty much like any other Android tablet on the market these days, that is until you get to the rear camera design (more on that later). It does come with an aluminium design, which adds a bit of a “premium” look and feel, although its display does rise above the metal sides, surrounded by a plastic frame all around.

Speaking of the display, the Redmi Pad 2’s screen features an 11-inch IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Decent specs for a budget device, but users after an AMOLED panel with a much smoother 120Hz rate might want to spend a bit more for such hardware. It does come with a reasonable brightness of up to 600 nits, as well as a sharp 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, which should be enough for most casual tablet tasks such as web and social media browsing, Netflix binges, and maybe some gaming every now and then.

As for gaming, the tablet will be able to handle most casual titles and maybe even some retro emulators, but don’t go expecting to run Genshin Impact on here—you’re getting MediaTek’s Helio G100-Ultra chip inside, a modest SoC that’s also found on a number of other budget Android devices out there. There are also two different RAM and storage configurations which come in either 4GB + 128GB, or 8GB + 256GB. There is support for expandable micro SD storage so you can slap a 2TB card in there for all your files and media.

Hyper OS 2 runs the show here, so users will get apps from both Google and Xiaomi, and this entire setup is powered by a decently-sized 9,000 mAh battery, which supports 18W charging speeds. Again we have to take into consideration the tablet’s budget-tier standing when it comes to specifications such as these. On the back you will find a single 8MP camera, which can record videos at a maximum of 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second. The front meanwhile comes with a 5MP camera.
