In what could probably be described as a cross between The Jetsons’ “Rosie the Robot” and EVE from Wall-E, LG’s new CLOiD robot assistant certainly looks the part as far as modern robots go. With that said though, LG is looking to go beyond traditional science fiction with CLOiD, and instead wants to bring a more practical approach to modern robotics with its new creation.

At its core, CLOiD is also designed to capitalize on AI-powered features with the goal of handling mundane household tasks, which to be honest would be a perfect use for modern AI. According to LG, the robot represents the company’s “Physical AI” initiative, and builds on the company’s existing ThinQ ecosystem in order to manage a wide array of household chores. For hardware, CLOiD is equipped with two seven-axis articulated arms and five-fingered hands, and can replicate human-like movements to perform tasks such as retrieving items from a refrigerator, preparing simple meals, and even folding laundry.

Inside, LG has equipped a specialized chipset in the head unit that uses Vision Language Models (VLM) and Vision Language Action (VLA). Simply put, these technologies allow CLOiD to convert visual data into structured understanding and physical movement, allowing it to recognize appliances and interpret user intent in real-time. The robot’s head unit also comes with built-in components including a a display, a speaker, cameras, various sensors and support for voice-based generative AI, and is capable of showing expressions when communicating with users.

For safety and stability, the robot also features a wheeled base with autonomous navigation and a low centre of gravity so it can operate securely around pets and children for example, while adjusting its torso height to reach objects at various levels. In addition, LG also announced that it was working on expanding into the robotics supply chain with the introduction of LG Actuator AXIUM™, a new brand of high-performance robotic components. With this, the company aims to provide lightweight, high-torque actuators that serve as the critical joints for the next generation of service robots.
